Another ring shot

Another progress shot of our rings! Amanda had a lot of problems with the seam on Matt’s ring, so she decided to scrap his and start over with new metal. Metal ain’t cheap, so it definitely says a lot about how much she values her work that she would start a piece completely over if she wasn’t satisfied with it. Anyway, on version 2.0, she said she achieved one of the most beautiful and perfect seam fits that she’s ever done, woohoo! In this pic, Matt’s still needs some pre-polishing done, and mine is ready to be polished and finished.

NY Times article

I posted this to our ‘public’ wedding website too, so if you’ve already seen it, sorry for the double post! The New York Times regularly does features in its Travel section called “36 Hours in _______”, and in July they did 36 Hours in Madison, Wisconsin. Click here to be taken to the article and to get excited about spending some time in Madtown!

Ring Progress

The Etsy seller who is making our wedding rings has sent me a couple of photos of the progress of our rings. They’re in the ‘ugly phase’ right now, but she says now they’re ready to be pre-polished then finished.

Here’s the first one she sent, after the metal was twisted to make the moebius part:

And here’s the next one, after the seams had been soldered and the rings started to become more round:

Next up is pre-polishing, then finishing and then mailing them to us! :-) Our target finish date was September 1, but it looks like we may get them before that. I’m really going to want to start wearing my ring, aren’t I?

Updates!

So much to report on, it’s hard to remember all the little things that have been accomplished! I’ll do my best…

We went shopping yesterday for a suit for Matt, and were completely overwhelmed with possibility. We went to Bloomingdale’s first, since I knew they would have a large, if expensive, collection. We weren’t really trying to buy anything yesterday, it was really just his first attempt at trying to figure out what kind of style he wants to get. He tried on a lot of jackets from different designers, and I think he pretty much settled that he’d like to get a black or dark charcoal suit, with a subtle pinstripe or texture to it. Pretty basic, but it will last him for a long time and he will get a lot of use out of something like that.

Since I cut my hair short, I’ve started looking for something to wear in my hair, like a headband or flower clip or something. I’ve mostly been looking on Etsy, and definitely have some favorites at the moment… Once I get my dress I’m sure I’ll be inspired to a more specific idea.

Our wedding rings are being made now; Amanda has been great, keeping us up to date on the process of the rings and everything. Just like when we bought my engagement ring, its really cool to be part of the process of design, to metal choice, to rough sketches and the inevitable ‘ugly phase’ and then to finally see the finished product. I can’t wait to see them.

The invitations are all done, stamped, sealed, addressed, etc. Tomorrow they will put in the mail, hooray!

Matt and I have been finalizing the details of the food with our caterer. We’ve decided to do a large spread of heavy appetizers, enough for a full meal, without doing a more typical salad + 2 entrees + 3 sides etc. We want to keep the food casual, the kind of stuff you’d serve to your friends at a housewarming party or while watching a Badger game. ;-) So we’re working with Bill at Bluephies to come up with a custom menu of appetizer-sized comfort food, like tenderloin sliders and fries, mini cheesesteaks, wings, and of course lots of veggie options too. We’ll probably also do some fruit, bread, and cheese to get things going.

We talked to our alcohol supplier, which is always a fun phone call, and they said we don’t need to order our booze until a week or two before the event, so we’re good holding off on that for now.

I was thinking of wearing these under my dress:

Green Chuck Taylors

:-D

What else… Oh! We decided on a honeymoon location – we’re going to Bar Harbor, Maine! We decided to stay stateside so we can make the most of our time off work, plus we’ve talked about going to Maine for several years now. We’ll definitely want to spend a day or two in Acadia National Park, plus we’d like to go whale watching if we can, see the puffins that Kira has told me so much about, eat lots of good meals, etc. We’re both really looking forward to it! Oh, and according to the Acadia National Park website, one of the great activities for the time we’ll be there is “leaf peeping,” which is a truly awesome way to say that the leaves might be changing colors and that it will be pretty. :-)

Matt has scheduled his bachelor party for the Thursday before the wedding in Madison, and I have scheduled my bachelorette party for Labor Day weekend in Carlisle, PA (where Colleen lives). Colleen has graciously offered to host the bachelorette party at her house, and I cannot wait! It will be small, just four of us girls as long as everyone can make it (Colleen, Kira, Stephanie and me). We’re planning on going hiking or something similarly outdoorsy on Saturday, hanging out that night and playing silly board games, then on Sunday going apple picking. It should be a lot of fun! And as far as I know (boys don’t need to plan as much I suppose), Matt is planning on getting drunk with his buddies. Haha :-)

I’m working on getting a day-of coordinator (or coordinators) to help run everything on wedding day. Because we’re piecing together everything on our own, it makes the more mundane things (like making sure the caterers can get into the pavilion, or having the kegs delivered and set up) seem complicated, so we’ll be hiring someone to help run those aspects of the day.

Flowers: Right now I don’t think we’re planning on doing a whole lot of flowers. Matt and I will probably hit the Farmer’s Market pretty early that day and pick out whatever’s pretty.

Officiant: As of right now, I’m pretty sure we’re not going to have an officiant. I did some research into the Wisconsin Family Code (which contains the provisions on marriage) and I found an interesting clause that allows couples to ‘self-solemnize’ their unions if it is traditional within the couple’s religion to not have an officiant. Now, its pretty clear that this provision is intended for the Quakers (in the Quaker tradition the couple’s community solemnizes a marriage as opposed to a particular person), but there are several other religions that either a) allow couples to self-solemnize their marriages or, more often b) do not have any particular traditions regarding marriage and allow the couple to do as they wish. I am working the County Clerk in Madison to determine what additional paperwork we’ll need to complete to be able to self-solemnize our marriage, but after we figure all that out, it seems like Matt and I will be able to marry ourselves! Of course there will still be other people involved in the ceremony, but as far as the actual, legal paper-signing and proclaiming that we are married, we should be able to do that ourselves, legally.

I keep coming up with more things to write about, but if I keep going I will never actually get anything done tonight! Haha. More to come, I’m sure of it…

Invitations

Lots has been going on lately for the Kampmeier-Muszynski wedding! All the details are starting to come together and its really starting to get exciting. Every once in awhile I have one of those moments of “ahhhh only two months and one week until the wedding!” which really seems like no time at all. I feel very calm about it most of the time, though. Maybe its because a lot of my work is in production, so I’m really good at making timelines and spreadsheets, thinking about all the details, and not forgetting anything. More likely, though, I think is that our attitudes going into this whole process were really key. We always wanted things to be laid-back, simple, casual, and most importantly, focused on what really matters. Like getting married! And making a huge commitment in front of our entire network of friends and family! Hehe.

Well, anyway, I’ve been working a lot on our invitations, and I’m really proud of them. I wanted to make something that fit into a regular mailing envelope (otherwise the postage can get very expensive), and that was made with recycled materials. Here’s the progress so far:

Front of Invite

The front of the invite. From top to bottom: Snoopy and Woodstock, Salt and Pepper, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Socks and Shoes.

The inside of the invitation

I created a little pocket by folding over the inside flap and gluing the top and bottom edges, so we can stuff a little information card and the RSVP card in there.

It says, "Some Things Are Just Made For Each Other!"

It says, "Some Things Are Just Made For Each Other! We've been travel buddies and running partners, bandmates and roommates, but most of all we've been best friends. Please join us as we become husband and wife."

Inside flap of invitation, showing the date and time

Inside flap of invitation, showing the date, time, location, and what to expect at the after party. :-)

So after all of that, I realized a big, stupid mistake on my part! I forgot to put our names on the invitation. Duh! The good thing is I had a printing snafu anyway (the paper doesn’t really work so well with a laser printer I found out), so I have to reprint them anyway. Still, how awesome would it be to send out the invitations without our names on them? Hahaha… Ooops.

Rehearsal Dinner

We booked our rehearsal dinner at the Essen Haus, a German restaurant and bierhalle of epic proportions. Okay but really, this place is awesome. We picked our menu, too, which may change, but right now consists of:

House Salad
German Sourdough Rye Bread
Family Style Entrees of:

  • Kasespätzle, vegetarian style
  • Assorted German Sausages
  • Sauerbraten

Potatoes:

  • German fried potatoes
  • Baked potatoes

Vegetables:

  • Sauerkraut
  • Vegetable of the day

Apple Strudel for dessert
Soda, milk, coffee or tea
First beer is on us, after that you’re on your own!

They typically have a live polka band, which furthers the awesomeness. It should be really fun!

Wedding Rings

Well, it’s been awhile since I’ve updated the blog, partly because my jobs have been crazy lately, and partly because we kind of took a long hiatus from all the planning. Now that we’re a few months out, we’ve definitely started to kick things back into gear.

We ordered our wedding rings this week! Or at least, we put down the deposit to start the process of having them made. We’re buying them from Etsy, from metalsmith Amanda Fisher, or AFMetalsmith on Etsy. Here’s a picture:

Mobius Band Ring

Mobius Band Ring

The symbolism of the Möbius Band is kind of cool – two sides becoming one and all that. But also, on the inside (and the outside too!) Matt and I both geek out for cool science-y stuff, so this was right up our alley. We had looked at and tried on a lot of rings, and even though we weren’t concerned with having matching rings, neither of us could really find anything that we liked. And then there was the Möbius band ring. So cool! Amanda is also really knowledgeable about metal allergies, which definitely made both of us more comfortable and confident in our metal choices. They should be finished in about 8 weeks, hooray!

dress sketches

I think the fabric collage in the back will be wider in relative proportion to the rest of the dress, judging by pictures she’s sent me. Other than that, I think its a pretty good representation of what I had in my head!

wedding rings

Matt and I went to look at wedding rings on Saturday! It was a lot of fun. We went back to the same jeweler where we got my e-ring, Little King Jewelry in the east village. I have no idea what I want in a wedding band, and Matt is mostly in the same boat. We tried on a lot of different styles… smooth finishes, brushed finishes, ones with embellishments, rounded edges, straight edges, squarish rings, etc etc. Fortunately we have a lot of time to figure it out.

Things are made a little more interesting because of Matt’s metal allergy – even white gold can’t be guaranteed that it is 100% nickel, palladium and cobalt free. The solution for white gold would be to get it rhodium plated, which would have to be replated every several years. Of course, then if he ever starts to have a reaction from that kind of ring, it will be hard to know whether its the metal or if he’s just not drying his hands well enough – you know what I mean? The easy solution would be to get something that is never alloyed with those metals, like platinum (crazy expensive), titanium, tungsten, or silver. Lots of things to think about!

A photographer, at last!

After more searching than I care to admit, Matt and I have finally found a photographer that we’re really happy with! I’ve lamented about our search to pretty much anyone who would listen, and eventually I finally figured out what my problem was. In the end, I landed a phone call with Andrew Yonda of Yonda Photography, who is one half of a husband-wife photography team in Madison. Our personalities really gelled, and for once I didn’t feel weird telling him about our somewhat unusual plans for our wedding. And what’s better is that he was excited to hear our plans, rather than put-off or confused, which is the reaction I had gotten from other photographers. So, yay! I’m super excited.

:-)
